Steel Coil Protection During Worldwide Export Shipping

PROBLEM

BHP ships sheet steel all over the world. Most of this passes through the equator, causing significant corrosion problems due to condensation and salt air. BHP needed packaging to protect steel coils from corrosion during export shipping worldwide.

APPLICATION

The steel coils were wrapped in two layers of Cor-Pak® VpCI® Stretch Film. The edges were protected by plastic edge strips. The internal protection is then wrapped with an additional two layers of stretch film to complete the packaging and protect the Cor-Pak® VpCI® Stretch Film from handling damage.

CONCLUSION

Cortec was selected because all packaging must be suitable for recycling, and Cor-Pak® VpCI® Stretch Film has this ability. The savings using Cor-Pak® VpCI® Stretch Film on corrosion claims for overseas shipments are very large indeed. BHP expects to package all its steel coils by this method and is converting two large production plants to this operation.
