PROBLEM
New galvanized iron roofing sheets were installed on CIGI’s liquid nitrogen loading dock. Management wanted the dock painted and protected as soon as possible. Lead and zinc chromate based primers were tried but adhesion had always been a problem. A typical practice was to etch away part of the galvanized coating with phosphoric acid prior to the application of an exterior type paint. However, this would lead to failure within one year.
APPLICATION
VpCI®-373 primer was applied after cleaning up with an industrial detergent. CIGI applied normal exterior-type alkyd paint as a primary coating. They used VpCI®-386 high-performance coating as a final top coat.
CONCLUSION
VpCI®-373 was proven to adhere completely on galvanized iron roofing sheets, and it performed better than the commmonly used primers like red lead or zinc chromates.
