Understanding VPCI: How It Works

In the humid and salty environment of the UAE, protecting your assets from corrosion is a constant challenge. Whether you’re dealing with industrial machinery, vehicles, or even everyday metal objects, corrosion can wreak havoc if you leave it unchecked. But what if there was a way to prevent it effectively? Enter VpCI® (Vapor-phase corrosion inhibitor), a revolutionary technology that’s changing the game in corrosion protection. Today, we’ll dive into what VpCI® is, how it works, and why it’s a must-have for your corrosion protection needs.

What Is VPCI® And How Does It Work?

VpCI®, or Vapor-phase Corrosion inhibitor, is a technology designed to protect metals from corrosion. Unlike our traditional corrosion inhibitors that are applied directly to the surface, VpCI® works by releasing a vapor that forms a protective layer on the surface of the metal. This invisible shield actively repels moisture, oxygen, and other corrosive elements, keeping the metal safe from rust and degradation. For example, suppose you have a piece of equipment stored is a warehouse. Over time, humidity and temperature fluctuations can obviously cause condensation, leading to corrosion of your equipment, right? By using VpCI® corrosion protection, you can make sure that your equipment remains in pristine condition. The vapor molecules reach every nook and cranny, even in complex machinery, providing comprehensive protection.

Benefits Of Using VPCI® For Corrosion Protection

Why choose VpCI® for your corrosion protection? Here’s why:

  1. Long lasting shield: VpCI® provides enduring corrosion protection, keeping your equipment in peak condition over time.
  2. Total coverage: VpCI® vapours every surface, even those tough-to-access spots, ensuring complete protection.
  3. Eco-friendly option: Many VpCI® products are environmentally friendly, allowing you to safeguard your assets while minimizing your environmental impact.
  4. Simple to use: VpCI® products are easy to apply, saving you time and reducing labour costs.
  5. Cost efficient: By preventing corrosion, VpCI® reduces maintenance expenses and extends the life of your equipment.

Choosing VpCI® isn’t just about protecting your assets; it’s about investing in long-term reliability and peace of mind.

Understanding The Different Types Of VPCI® Products

VpCI® technology offers a variety of products tailored to specific needs:

  • VpCI® Packaging Materials: Films, bags, and papers infused with VpCI® technology. Ideal for protecting metal parts during shipping and storage, these materials ensure your products stay corrosion-free.
  • VpCI® coatings: These come as paints, sprays, or liquids, providing a protective barrier on metal surfaces. Perfect for outdoor equipment exposed to harsh conditions.
  • VpCI® additives: Mixed into oils, lubricants, and other substances, these additives deliver corrosion protection across various applications, including automotive and industrial sectors.
  • VpCI® emitters: These small devices release VpCI® vapours into enclosed spaces, like electrical cabinets, to protect sensitive electronics from corrosion.

Choosing the right VpCI® product for your specific application ensures optimal corrosion protection.

Let us explain using an example

Shipping high-value metal components like turret brakes requires top-notch protection to make sure they arrive in perfect condition. A manufacturer needed to store turret brakes for an extended period before shipping them from North America to Singapore. Concerned about the potential corrosion, they turned to Cortec® corporation’s VpCI® (Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor) technology to safeguard their valuable components.

Long-Term Corrosion Protection

The manufacturer opted for VpCI®-368, a reliable, temporary corrosion protection coating designed for long-term storage, even in harsh outdoor conditions. This coating creates a strong barrier that protects metal parts from moisture, salt, and other corrosive elements. When it’s time to ship or use the parts, VpCI®-368 can be easily removed with an alkaline degreaser like VpCI®-414, ensuring the turret brakes are clean and ready for assembly without the hassle of extensive cleaning.

Added Protection with VpCI® shrink Film

To further protect the turret brakes, the manufacturer wrapped them in VpCI®-126 shrink film. This transparent film is specifically designed to guard metal parts from corrosion during storage and transport. It forms a sealed environment around the parts, reducing exposure to moisture and contaminants. The film also releases corrosion inhibitors that create a protective layer on the metal surface, keeping corrosion at bay.

Safeguarding control panels and spare parts

For smaller components like control panels and spare parts, the manufacturer used VpCI®-308 pouches. Made from breathable Tyvek material, these pouches allow air circulation while blocking moisture and corrosive elements. Each pouch protects upto a cubic meter of space, ensuring that small to medium-sized parts remain in excellent condition during storage.

First-Class condition upon arrival

Thanks to Cortec® VpCI® technology, the manufacturer successfully stored and transported turret brakes, control panels, and spare parts without corrosion. The combined use of VpCI®- 368 coatings, VpCI® -126 shrink film, and VpCI® – 308 pouches provided comprehensive protection, ensuring that all components arrived in Singapore in pristine condition, ready for immediate use or further assembly.

This case highlights the effectiveness of Cortec® VpCI® products in protecting metal parts during long-term storage and transport, offering reliable solutions for maintaining the integrity and quality of metal goods in challenging environments.

VpCI® corrosion protection is a game-changer for industries and individuals and if you are looking to safeguard their metal assets from the relentless attack of corrosion,. Contact Cortec® Middle East today to explore our range of VpCI® products and find the perfect solution for your needs. Don’t wait until corrosion takes a toll-act now and secure the future of your equipment!
