PROBLEM
Weirton Steel needed a cost effective system to package cold rolled and galvanized steel coils that would prevent corrosion during extended storage and shipment while also reducing labor and handling costs.
APPLICATION
VpCI®-146 was applied to the outer surface of a 0.080 paper tube inserted in the bore or eye of coil to prevent corrosion and handling damage. Combining this with a laminated I.D. edge protector and corrugated doughnut sidewall protector minimizes damage even further. Cor-Pak® VpCI® Cocooning Stretch Film was developed to conform to the coils using a rotary overhead wrapper applying film down to the coil opening.
Weirton chose Wulftec International to supply semi-automatic overhead stretch wrappers placed strategically throughout the mills over specific blocker rolls used to turn the coils during wrapping in rolling position. Domestic shipments are single wrapped while export coils receive a laminated O.D. edge protector and a second overwrap of film.
CONCLUSION
Cortec® VpCI® products protected the steel coils from corrosion during storage and shipment. This system has reduced costs for labor, handling, and claims, while achieving the superior results anticipated by Weirton Steel Corporation.
