Protecting Annular Apaces of Double Wall Storage Tanks

PROBLEM

Conoco Oil needed corrosion protection for the annular spaces of double wall storage tanks.

APPLICATION

VpCI®-307 powder was applied to the annular space of the storage tanks. The product could be used either mixed with backfill in dry powder form or diluted with water in a concentration range of 1–2.5% by weight.

CONCLUSION

VpCI®-307 could be applied easily to new storage tanks prior to assembly. It was also inexpensive and environmentally safe. Not only did it offer effective corrosion protection; it could also be used in conjunction with cathodic protection if desired. Based on the success experienced at Conoco Oil, other oil/chemical companies have adopted this method of corrosion protection: DuPont, Texaco, and Vista Chemical. Conoco had been using various Cortec® products for preservation, hydro blasting, and corrosion protection of tubular. Using their own lab testing procedures, Conoco determined VpCI®-307 powder gave the best protection for this application.
