What Is Pipeline Corrosion and Why Does It Cost So Much?

Corrosion is the gradual degradation of metal caused by chemical reactions with the surrounding environment. For pipelines carrying oil, gas, water, or chemicals, even minor corrosion can escalate into:

Cathodic protection is one of the most established and reliable methods for protecting buried and submerged metallic pipelines from corrosion. The basic principle: by making the pipeline the cathode of an electrochemical cell, you suppress the oxidation reactions that cause metal to corrode.

Two Main Types of Cathodic Protection

  1. Sacrificial Anode CP (Galvanic CP)

Sacrificial anodes — typically made of zinc, magnesium, or aluminum — are connected to the pipeline. Being more electrochemically active, they corrode preferentially, sacrificing themselves to protect the pipeline metal. This method is simple, requires no external power, and is ideal for smaller systems or remote locations.

  1. Impressed Current CP (ICCP)

An external DC power source drives current from an inert anode through the soil/electrolyte to the pipeline surface. ICCP is more powerful and adjustable, making it suitable for long pipelines, high-resistance environments, or situations where sacrificial anodes alone aren’t enough.

⚠️ Important: Cathodic protection alone is not always enough. CP can be shielded in areas with disbonded coatings, cased pipeline crossings, or where microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is active. Supplementing CP with advanced chemical inhibitors dramatically improves protection.

 

 

Where Cathodic Protection Falls Short

CP is powerful  but it has well-known blind spots. Here are the situations where standard CP systems struggle:

  • Cased pipeline crossings the annular space blocks CP current from reaching the carrier pipe
  • Shielded areas under disbonded coating CP cannot penetrate the gap
  • Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) sulfate-reducing bacteria can accelerate attack even under cathodic protection
  • Aboveground storage tank bottoms soil-side corrosion in areas difficult for CP to reach
  • Mothballed or idle pipelines —protection gaps during shutdown periods
