What Every Oil & Gas Operator in the Middle East Must Know
If you manage pipelines in the oil and gas sector, you already know that corrosion is not just a maintenance problem it’s a multi-million dollar liability. Across the Middle East, buried and submerged pipelines face some of the most aggressive corrosion environments on earth: high salinity soils, extreme temperatures and humidity that never lets up.
The good news? With the right combination of cathodic protection (CP) and advanced corrosion inhibitor technology, pipeline failures are preventable. This guide breaks down the essentials and shows you exactly how Cortec® Middle East can help protect your assets.
Corrosion is the gradual degradation of metal caused by chemical reactions with the surrounding environment. For pipelines carrying oil, gas, water, or chemicals, even minor corrosion can escalate into:
The global cost of corrosion in the oil and gas industry is estimated in the hundreds of billions of dollars annually. In the Middle East specifically, the combination of saline soils, high temperatures, and aggressive microbial activity makes pipelines especially vulnerable.
Cathodic protection is one of the most established and reliable methods for protecting buried and submerged metallic pipelines from corrosion. The basic principle: by making the pipeline the cathode of an electrochemical cell, you suppress the oxidation reactions that cause metal to corrode.
Sacrificial anodes — typically made of zinc, magnesium, or aluminum — are connected to the pipeline. Being more electrochemically active, they corrode preferentially, sacrificing themselves to protect the pipeline metal. This method is simple, requires no external power, and is ideal for smaller systems or remote locations.
An external DC power source drives current from an inert anode through the soil/electrolyte to the pipeline surface. ICCP is more powerful and adjustable, making it suitable for long pipelines, high-resistance environments, or situations where sacrificial anodes alone aren’t enough.

| ⚠️ Important: Cathodic protection alone is not always enough. CP can be shielded in areas with disbonded coatings, cased pipeline crossings, or where microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is active. Supplementing CP with advanced chemical inhibitors dramatically improves protection. |
CP is powerful but it has well-known blind spots. Here are the situations where standard CP systems struggle:
This is exactly where Cortec® technology fills the gap. Explore our Cased Pipeline Crossings solutions and learn how VpCI® technology reaches the areas CP cannot.
At Cortec® Middle East, we don’t just supplement cathodic protection we enhance it with science. Our two core technology platforms, VpCI® and CorroLogic®, are engineered specifically for the challenges facing pipeline operators in the Middle East.
VpCI® (Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors) technology works by releasing inhibitor molecules that travel through the vapor phase and deposit on metal surfaces, forming a protective molecular layer. Unlike conventional liquid-applied inhibitors, VpCI® reaches confined spaces, crevices, and complex geometries that other treatments miss.
For pipelines, VpCI® is particularly valuable during hydrotesting, mothballing, and preservation. Learn more about VpCI® Technology →
CorroLogic® is a specially engineered VpCI® treatment for cased pipeline crossings and aboveground storage tank bottoms. It provides corrosion protection in the annular space of cased crossings exactly where CP current cannot reach. See our Cased Pipeline Crossings page →
Pipelines are especially vulnerable during hydrotesting and long-term shutdown. Cortec® offers purpose-built solutions for both scenarios. Explore Hydrotesting & Mothballing solutions →
