Long-Term Storage of an Aircraft Engine

PROBLEM

Concern that the moisture associated with long-term storage of an overhauled aircraft engine in a home garage would contain salt/other corrosive content due to the winter months could harm the engine. The instructions from Lycoming, the engine manufacturer, called for considerable added preventitive measures that, for the lack of the materials specified, could not adopted.

APPLICATION

Cortec® kindly provided a small amount of materials so that the aircraft’s engine could safely be stored long-term. VpCI®-329 Oil Concentrate was poured into the engine interior, as recommended and it was then wrapped in Cor-Pak® VpCI® Stretch Film. Placed inside the stretch film and in the plywood structure were about a dozen moisture absorbant silica gel bags, and dessicant-filled, spark-plug sized plugs were placed in the spark-plug openings.

CONCLUSION

Unwrapped nearly 10 years later, the exterior appearance was still in pristine condition with no evidence of corrosion anywhere. And since the concentrate was poured into the engine interior as recommended, and plugs were placed in the spark plug openings, it can be assumed that there is no corrosion in the interior of the engine as well.
