Long-Term Rust Prevention on Spare Marine Engine Crankshaft

PROBLEM

A large spare marine engine crankshaft needed to be preserved for up to 10 years of storage.

APPLICATION

The crankshaft was cleaned with mineral spirits. Then VpCI®-369 was applied by brush to all surfaces and holes. A 10 mil (250 µ) piece of VpCI®-126 HP UV Shrink Film was cut and laid into a long, narrow metal storage box, with another narrow sheet of VpCI®-126 HP UV Shrink Film and a foam pad placed between the wooden bracing and the crankshaft for extra cushioning. BioPad® emitters were placed throughout the package as an additional source of VpCI® protection. Next, the VpCI®-369-coated crankshaft was lowered into the film-lined box. The film was wrapped around the crankshaft and all seams sealed using heat shrink tape. The upper film overlapped the lower film to create a watershed in case of moisture ingress.

CONCLUSION

The customer was happy with the preservation and shipped the spare part to a dealership on the east coast. Sealed tightly in its box with a variety of Cortec® preservation materials, the crankshaft was wellequipped to be safely stored either indoors or outdoors for many years until needed as a spare.
