PROBLEM

A specialty chemical manufacturer’s plant showed signs of delamination and corrosion failure. The painted concrete blocks on the exterior of the plant were peeling to various degrees. Mold was present in some areas. The exterior pipes were severely rusted, as were some of the chemical holding tanks. The steel flashing surrounding the building was also peeling.

APPLICATION

Concrete Block
All surfaces were power washed to remove any loose paint. Bleach was used to remove mold on concrete surfaces if needed. MCI®- Architectural Coating was spray applied in the 2 to 3 mil (50 – 75 microns) dry range. A second coat was applied the next day in the same film thickness range.

Metal pipes, tanks, and steel flashing

All surfaces were power washed to remove any loose paint. The pipes and tanks were further scraped to remove any additional loose rust not removed with the power wash. VpCI® CorrVerter® was brushed on the rusted steel pipes, flashing, and tanks where needed. The film thickness of the CorrVerter® varied between 2 mils and 6 mils (50 – 150 microns) dry depending upon the degree of rust. The CorrVerter® changes the rust from an orange color to black when conversion is completed and the surface is sealed. The next day VpCI®-386 was spray coated at approximately 3 mils (75 microns) dry on the metal in two colors: white and green (flashing only). All coatings were applied under dry conditions at temperatures between 75 and 85ºF (24 and 30ºC).

CONCLUSION

VpCI®-386, MCI®-Architectural Coating, and VpCI®- CorrVerter® can be effectively used to enhance the appearance of a manufacturing plant. The corrosion inhibitors in these coatings will significantly increase the useful life of the structure.
