Above Ground Tank Preservation

PROBLEM

Phillips Paint Products had five above ground storage tanks (three 1000 gallon & two 2000 gallon tanks). The tanks were double walled with a phosphate coating on the walls. In the past, Phillips used under ground tanks that leaked. Test wells were required and the excavatory/disposal of soil and tanks were estimated to cost $80,000.

APPLICATION

The new tanks are above ground and are one to two years old. The manufacturer’s warranty was for one year. The customer wanted better protection and decided to go with VpCI®-309 Powder. The application called for 5 pounds (2.3 kg) of VpCI®-309 Powder for use at 1 ounce per cubic foot (1,001 g/m3 void space for all tanks.

CONCLUSION

The end result was that the manufacturer of the tanks is currently investigating the use of Cortec® VpCI® powders for use with all double wall tank manufacturing.
